if anyone has encountered a problem where the inbox doesn't seem to work
(i.e. can't get at the messages), edit the inbox.msf file. make sure you
have a backup, then use a text editor to edit inbox.msf. i had a few
lines of garbage characters at the end. the file should contain lines like:

[1AC93D:^98(^92^433)]
[2659FE:^98(^92^6F2)]
<(6CD=1467b6)(71A=e2)(39E=5a)(71B=269755)(71C=3b4ff136)>
{1:^9D {(k^9E:c)(s=9u)}

or something vaugely intelligible, but not a haphazard glut of ascii
characters.
after removing the offending lines, the folder functionality was restored.
