News Server "keep alive" parameter?

Is there something in the UI or elsewhere that will work to keep a news 
server connection alive between reading messages? I'm not sure what the 
current value is (if there is one at all), but regardless of the server 
I connect to, it seems I get about 3 minutes of idle time before being 
prompted for my username/pw again.  Or, can Mozilla simply re-send the 
correct user/pw info when prompted?
