AFAIK, it is expunging the IMAP mailbox.

When you delete a message in an IMAP mailbox, it gets marked as deleted 
(instead of actually deleteing  it from the disk). Messages marked as 
deleted are not actually deleted from the disk until the mailnox is 
expunged.


I Mozilla handles messaged marked as deleted by not displaying it in the 
message list. Other apps (including webmail apps) may handle this 
differently. Eg, it may use this for handling undoing message deletion, 
for example. The best thing to do is try it out by sending some mail to 
yourself.
