Check whether the configuration file (config) has the right owner. Try
"chmod news *".

You have to use movemail. IIRC has no GUI option for that. Check your
prefs.js file in ./mozilla/... and change the server type to movemail,
for example:
user_pref("mail.server.server1.type", "movemail");
Also, IIRC creates a locking file in /var/spoool/mail - so therefore it
needs rw rights in that directory:
chmod a+w /var/spool/mail
