I've found a workaround: make the window extra-wide.
What the bug really is, is that the window behaves as if it can't resize
below some (fairly wide) minimum width. As you resize below this width,
one pixel at a time, you see the vert scrollbar disappear one pixel at
a time, and the horz reformatting stops, too, so that the text remains
frozen, and disappears off the right one pixel at a time.
In other words, the XUL thinks there's a minimum width, but you're
allowed to resize the window below this width.
I'm bringing this up here, rather than bugzilla, because it seems like
such a huge problem with using 0.9.7 for mail/news at all (I'm on
Win2k). Bottom line: I can use it, if I make my viewer panes wide enough.
