The mail files are text files.  If you open one with a text editor the 
format should be pretty clear.  You should be able to edit out the 
messages and put the file back.  Do the usual backup and do this with 
netscape/mozilla closed.  The index file will be regenerated when you 
start Netscape/Mozilla again.
