You may have missed the point here. I am not talking about a 'news' aware 
mailer (or is that a mail capable news agent?), but a general purpose mailer.
  Specific example using only the mail composer; no fair using a 'news agent'

    to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
    reference: a9h8gi$1dua$[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Your mail should show up in that news group in a thread with
the subject "Test 333" (base message was picked at random).

   That is a mail composer being initialized from a news agent.
