This looks to be exactly it.

Now, how do I blow away the address book - the entire thing, not just
the list - without having to redo the whole profile?

The reason I ask, is now my address book at home is unusable and trying
to open it hangs mozilla (cpu loop). Deleting the address book file
also causes moz loop.

(I got in this state because I imported the offending address book at
home, having first exported it at work. For some reason, going through
the import process using a bad list REALLY messes up mozilla.)
