I am not exactly sure what these stats mean, but if you mean there is a 
hard limit of 50MB on the memory available to Mozilla than I am vaguely 
surprised that Moz doesn't regularly crash...  As for attachments, I 
just sent myself a 4MB attachment, and moz retrieved it in less than 2 
seconds along with some other mail.  The longest Moz has ever taken on 
my mail is 10 minutes when I had >19,000 messages/80MB in my mailbox... 
So 5 minutes for one message seems a bit long and may have to do with 
your weird memory setup[though it may not be weird, I am not real 
familiar with Mac OS][I have 384MB of RAM and 1GB of swap[which I assume 
is similar to Virtual Memory] which Moz has unlimited access to].  You 
also never mentioned the speed of your internet connection[I have 
dialup, but Moz Mail doesn't use the internet] though I am assuming that 
it is some form of broadband...
