I also had trouble with newsgroups before. What happened, I think, was
that I opened two mailnews window and accidently set them to open the
same newly subscribed newsgroups so that both windows tried to download
headers from the newsgroups. I then cancelled and downloading. After
that I couldn't see anything when opening that newsgroup. I ended up
removing the entire news account and adding it back later. I was
then able to access the newsgroup. (note: removing an account will
reset all your read/unread records for all your subscribed newsgroups
in that account).
