The selections are there for you to decide how you want to view incoming
mail/news messages. If you have no problem with HTML then select
"original html" and ALL messages will be viewed in their native format
including plain/text. If you select "simple html" then an incoming html
message will be viewed with all complex coding stripped out, plain/text
will still be plain text. If all you want to view is plain text
regardless of the format then select "as plain/text" and ALL messages
regardless of format will be viewed as "plain/text" .....
