Bug 79740 submitted on this. After further use, disappearing navigation
buttons appears to be random. I was working bugzilla and set about to
submit an update on another bug. Once done I noticed the back button was
greyed, and I was in the only Mozilla session showing in the tasklist.
To regain the use of the back button I had to close Mozilla and reopen.
AFAIK, certain events could be spawning a new browser window directly on
top of the existing but then destroying the old. Dunno how I might check
for the possibility.
