With Netscape 4.61, I can click File --> Subscribe, then click on the Search tab even before the list of newsgroups is complete, and search for a string that partially matches a newsgroup name; e.g., I can search for "storage" and find all newsgroups with "storage" anywhere in the name. There does not seem to be such a feature in mozilla: all I can do is wait (a looong time) for the list of newsgroups and *hope* I can find the desired newsgroup by scrolling through the list.
