I've looked at this some more and may have identified the class of pages that induce the failure. It appears that any sufficient long page will show the symptoms. The page does not even need to be html. A pure text file will suffice. The one text file I tested against started to experience the problem when it exceeded 1724 lines, if that means anything. Resizing the window does not change this number.
