Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I had used the official-IBM-refreshed Netscape to download these
files, and it had DOWNLOADED THEM IN ASCII MODE !!!!

Whichever protocol_architect specified that ASCII mode is to be
used as the download default for unrecognized file-types should
be shot.  Whichever browser_implementer slavishly followed that
specification should be thrown naked onto a fire-ant nest.

p.s.  With the files downloaded correctly, a non-empty Mozilla
      screen opened.  But I had to download the nightly files
      before the MultiZilla tabs showed up on my Mozilla screen.
