I've never seen this problem. Very little reaches my inbox. Most emails 
are filtered into other folders that are first level subfolders (to the 
account, rather than inbox).

I wonder if it is in any way related to binary attachments. I've never 
found a way to make Mozilla display an attached jpg, or even tell me 
that there is a jpg attached. The only way I know if I get one is if the 
sender tells me in the body that there is one.
