I think that is very reasonable. but ONLY if there is NOT a MOZILLA_HOME 
(over-riding HOME is possible)

So prefer
1) MOZILLA_HOME
2) HOME
and if all else fails.
3) mozilla's directory for profiles.

the same thing you if mozilla_home is on FAT... FAIL :-)
If you can detect FAT that HOME is pointing, then ask the user for a 
MOZILLA_HOME location that supports LFNs.?
