Open/Run Downloaded Applications

Mozilla Developers,

    Is there a particular reason that there is no Open/Run option for
downloading applications?  I can see how it might be seen as a security
risk, but Netscape 4.x and Internet Explorer have that feature and it is
quite pleasant to not have to place the application somewhere on the hard
drive and then have to go and find it.

    Any light you can shed on this subject would be very helpful.
