It's not too dangerous to set that pref, as long as you're using the most recent version of Mozilla. It's mainly a "belt and suspenders" measure - an extra level of protection for local files. It minimizes the effect of certain security holes by keeping them from stealing local files. Since we don't have any such holes (that we know of) right now, the risk of disabling this check is pretty low.

I can include in "prefs.js" the following line:
user_pref("security.checkloaduri", false);

Can someone tell me why this is a bad thing to do? I'm a newbie to
security issues. I'm having a similar issue as the orginial poster,
and I want to know how much danger I'm putting myself in.

Thanks,

-Tom
