I'll try and appeal to your regret ;)  The reason that
I don't advise people to use Linux* or *BSD is
that anyone who might benefit from those systems
already knows it, and doesn't need any advice.  They
already know enough to know that the core of the
problem is in the Microsoft OS, browser and related
apps.

But, for the vast majority of people out there, they are
faced with all sorts of conflicting opinions as to what
the problem is.  They chose Windows because it was
the simplest thing going.  They are not going to install
an open source solution even if you pay them for it;
they are the people who have real lives, real jobs, and
real families on which to spend their short days.

(personally I use FreeBSD, and would use a Mac if I
could get a laptop with a thinkpad keyboard.)
