If you want to build just the xpcom sample, then the GECKO SDK would be good enough. Try getting it from here

And yes, I do accept that it is indeed difficult to get it going for the first time. If you want a sample project built with the geck-sdk mail me and I will send it across to you (remove the NOSPAM from the mail id).

this set of webpages unfortunately seems to vastly underestimate the
infrastructure that needs to be set up on one's computer to
successfully compile even this simple example. More explicit
instructions of how to compile the xpcom sample without having to
download & configure the entire Mozilla build source would be greatly
appreciated. :(
