Good advice, I ran across the "Creating XPCOM Components" guide ( http://www.mozilla.org/projects/xpcom/book/cxc/ ) yesterday and that seems to be the best, most reliable guide I've found to date. It mentioned the Gecko SDK (as you point out) although I had to look around within mozilla.org to find the prebuilt win32 SDK and that was easy to grab.
I am 90% there, the files in xpcom sample do compile, but in the link process it is looking for _PL_strrchr and _PL_strrstr and neither of those show up in any of the .lib files in the Gecko SDK (at least not the copy that I got via ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.0/sdk/ ). Which .lib file has these in it? Also is there an easy way to tell MSVC++ (I am using version 6.0) to use xpidl rather than its own evil Microsoft IDL compiler? I had to use a "Custom Build" step, which will become annoying since you have to do it on a per-source-file basis.
