Maybe it's just me, but i frown on sockets used for IPC. I tend to think of shared memory or memory-mapped files as real IPC, unless 2 distinct boxes are involved.

I also had a question about out-of-proc components in XPCOM, and as of know i'm quite convinced that they are not supported by the XPCOM yet.
