It was designed with Mozilla in mind, but we use it for non-Mozilla
applications.  We also are cross platform (Windows & Mac) and XPInstall was a
compelling technology.  Unfortunately the Mac version has no OSX native
version, has been deprecated and I have seen no mention of it's revival.  I've
toyed with the idea of organizing a project to revive the Mac version, but
since I am not a C/C++ programmer I do not have the skills to do the actual
work.

If your intent is for a Linux/Windows version, you will probably do well.
