It was designed with Mozilla in mind, but we use it for non-Mozilla applications. We also are cross platform (Windows & Mac) and XPInstall was a compelling technology. Unfortunately the Mac version has no OSX native version, has been deprecated and I have seen no mention of it's revival. I've toyed with the idea of organizing a project to revive the Mac version, but since I am not a C/C++ programmer I do not have the skills to do the actual work.
If your intent is for a Linux/Windows version, you will probably do well.
