You are right!
VBR is now in LAME 3.11pre3. It is very simple: it just switches to
256kbs for frames which contain short blocks. It was really just a
test to see if it works. I will try and add distortion based VBR
next.
I've only tested it with mp3x and with my cheesy laptop speakers.
It looks good, but I wont be able to do actual listening tests
until tomorrow.
