Are you sure that mpg123 really supports VBR?
For a while I used GQmpeg a frontend to mpg123. 
But the predicted times where like crap on VBR 
encoded files and the slider jumped around.
By now it seems that it handles a stream of frames
with different bitrates correct, but nothing more.
