I disagree that the dyn. range of (L-R)/sqrt2 is less than that of the sum.
What if the right channel is the exactly opposite of the left ?
Then of both have a 60 units of energy , then the sum , I mean , difference
will have 120 units !

Notice that Bells are logaritmic, so you can't just add and substract them.

I think that adding ( or substracting ) two 96 dB channels gives you one with
102 bB. ( + 6 dB is x2 absolute; I think  )
