I've never found a discrepance of 1/2 in any significant sized program, but
I sometimes see variations of +/-5%.  (in gprof output etc)

I used to find on my freebsd box, that LAME would run faster if I had netscape
running and was connected to the net. Tres Weird.

I assume the best way to benchmark would be to run in single user mode at a
niceness of -20.  But i know nix about hardware.

Has anyone considered cache issues and lame?
