A very new version is available as a plugin for 'Nero Burning Rom' cd burning program.
Price DEM 29 (released October 99).
Nero itself can sometimes also be obtained around the same street price or is included
w. CD burners.
The new FhG has fast, normal and slow mode and optional VBR.
Fast mode is 8..10x real time on a celeron at 450 which is amazing because the quality
is also excellent, especially at VBR. What sucks in my opinion is the high frequency
filter (last FhG I measured was -3dB at 14 kHz although it was told to be 16 kHz).
Also if I play back in Winamp, VBR results in completely mad runtime length display,
so telling the length of a playlist becomes impossible. Also the bitrate results at
VBR are quite unpredictable, and sometimes the bitrate chosen is simply too low so
that quality suffers.
This was a more severe problem w. the old FhG which would produce absolute crap with
certain pieces of music where you wouldn't even expect it (that even at fixed bitrate,
but accompanied by a dramatic increase in processing speed). That was the reason why I
looked for an alternative and got to LAME.

I submit to you that in my opinion, LAME is still more useful (better VBR behavior)
and I can't tell any quality difference from whatever music I tried so far, including
several very good original CDs.
BTW Normal mode in the new FhG is 7 times slower, slow mode even 49 times (who needs
that?).
Ripping and encoding can be done w. the Nero/FhG combo in one step, speed was 4x on my
system (bare ripping speed was 11x).

3.1 is the latest version posted on the fhg web site, but does anyone know
if the encoder is still in development internally? i know of many companies
who dont always release the latest version of their software publicly on
their web site, you have to be a registered user to find out about updates.

secondly, does anyone know where i can obtain a full version of the fhg
encoder?
