Mark,

I was playing around with the -X n in the command line for LAME 3.60 and I
found -X 3 delivers a much better overall sound that is stunningly decent in
VBR mode. It actually made joint stereo sound good for once with few if any
artifacts and an airy top end that wasn't grainy with a 165 kb/sec average.
Here is the command line I used for it: -V 6 -b 128 -B 224 -m j -h -X 3

I used Alanis Morissette's MTV Unplugged CD, track 10 King of Pain. Very
nice overall sound at an extremely reasonable bit rate. I feel most users
would like the result and not really pick up artifacts with most material.
The default setting produced artifacts in the high frequecies with a faint
shaker and chimes in the backround. But the -X 3 setting does it
beautifully all the way down to a 165 kb/sec average. I could not get the
default setting to encode certain backround sounds without artifacts
regardless of how high the average bitrate was. But the -X 3 option cleaned
up alot of upper midrange and high frequency garbage. Sounds nice and airy
in the demanding live acoustic music I chose to test it with.

There was little if any descernable difference between VBR 6 at 165 kb/sec
and VBR 5 at 180 kb/sec which was surprising to me. I'm still putting 3.60
through the paces. I'll try out more difficult sounds because I am very
impressed this time and intrigued with the -X 3 setting. It may just seem
to be doing a good job with this one piece of music. We will see how it
stands up to real torture. :)

Later,
Timothy
