I have also heard this.

I looked into it, and I think it is just related to the encoder delay
(number of 0 samples added to the beginning of the mp3 file by the
encoder). It seems to be playback/sound card initialization problem.
The .wav file produced by musicmatch from LAME encoded mp3's looks
perfect.

I took a test case, 100only.wav, and did the following:

100only.mp3 encoded by mp3enc3.1 (encoder delay = 1160)
Sounds good when played by music match

100only.mp3 encoded by lame, with encoder delay set to 1160:
               (ENCDELAY=1160 in encoder.h)
Sounds good when played by music match

100only.mp3 encoded by lame, with encoder delay = 576
(ENCDELAY=576 in encoder.h, the default setting)

When played by musicmatch, I hear a slight glitch
at the beginning of the file. However, if musicmatch
converts it back to a .wav file, the resulting .wav
               file looks perfect.
