I tried to figure out a problem I had when encoding a T.O.P. track
("What is hip", a funk song recorded 1973 - so just analog effects on
the track).

When using ear phones I found some subtile flanging effects (there are
very sharp attacks from the brass section and there is much bass and
drums [hihat] activity) even with 192 kBit (CBR hi quality mode - VBR 1
has additonal problems if the min. bitrate is below 160 kBit and/or if
the encoder can use joint stereo).

To my surprise the flanging effects were reduced when I changed the
FLOAT definition to double (comparing the decoded PCM output of
float/double variation shows much bigger differences than +/- 1 !!).

Anybody out there who made similar experiences?

Hardware: PowerMac G3, Sennheiser HD 490 ear phones

Best regards,

Wilfried Behne

P.S.: Always using doubles decreased the speed only by 1% on my
machine...
