AFAIK, mp3 is part of ISO 11172-3 and ISO 13818-3
These are patents which cover mp3 and mp2, like
discussed short time ago on this list.
mp3 (LAME) and mp2 (tooLAME) are NOT free in every
country - vorbis is free, because it's not depending
on existing patents.
