Using LAME 3.85 beta, compiled from source. (AMD K6-2, Debian GNU/Linux,
kernel 2.2.16, glibc 2.1.3, gcc 2.95.2.) The GTK+ lines were commented out
in the Makefile. The input file was this:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 greg greg 461544764 Jul 9 12:23 Thick As a Brick.wav
I started LAME with this command line:
$ lame -v Thick\ As\ a\ Brick.wav Thick\ As\ a\ Brick.mp3
The encoding seems to be going fine, but after a while the estimates
went wacky:
===============================================================================
LAME version 3.85 (www.sulaco.org/mp3)
Using polyphase lowpass filter, transition band: 17960 Hz - 18494 Hz
Encoding Thick As a Brick.wav to Thick As a Brick.mp3
Encoding as 44.1 kHz VBR(q=4) j-stereo MPEG1 LayerIII ( 9.0x estimated) qval=2

A bit later, they changed again:

Needless to say, a lot more than 4 minutes of CPU time had been used at
that point (it was more like 75 minutes). The CPU/estimated figures
continued to climb after that.
I'm sending this before the encoding has finished, because I'm too
impatient to wait for it. :-)
