The SB16 may certantly not be the best soundcard, nor may it be able to
reliably represent the 2^16 output levels encodeable by 16bit audio, you
can be preety darn sure that it can do more then 8 bit. :)

The difference is very audible. Even your telephone has more then 8
perceptable bits of resolution (yes, yes, the telephone uses a 8bit
datastream but the log responce yealds audio that sounds >= 12bit linear
pcm)..
