Good headphones and a good soundcard are of course, very important. I would
have posted this kind of a message if Roel didn't!
For headphones, you may try the Grado SR60s or 80s. They sound very good,
but they are a bit bulky. Koss Porta Pro is pretty good too. They are
cheaper, and are very comfortable. If you want even cheaper headphones
which sound good, go for Koss Sporta Pro. They are available for under $20
and sound about the same as the Porta Pro. Sennheiser does produce quality
headphones, but all of their headphones aren't as good. I highly recommend
that you check out the reviews before you buy anything. Here are some good
sites:

I was very happy when I upgraded to SB Live! from AWE32. The output of SB
Live! is very clear and clean. Also, the price isn't very high any more -
and they worth the money.
You _should_ invest on your soundcard in order to enjoy high quality music.
And if you want to check out the quality of an MP3 encoder, nothing can
substitute headphones. It doesn't matter if you have a very high quality
and very costy speaker system - there are a lot of variables to affect
sound: like, speaker positioning, room accoustics etc.
