well, once upon a time there was ogg squish, which was open
source, but the source has disappeared (at least I haven't been
able to find it). I heard Monty is currently too busy with
vorbis to get to the lossless stuff right now, so in the meantime
I'm doing just what you mentioned. time is short but when I get
something useful I will put up the code.
at least with lossless encoding it's not so bad to have an
interim solution... when ogg squish comes back at least there
will be no generation loss converting.

p.s. don't expect radically greater compression ratios though...
there is a limit with what you can do with lossless compression.
but the format I'm working on will support streaming and sample-
accurate seeking, which shorten doesn't.
