I would rather that than making replys to the list a pain-in-the-ass. 
Really, do you more frequently reply direct to the author than to the
list?  For me that might occur once in a thousand replys, if that.

I beg to differ.  I am on over a dozen technical mailing lists and
mp3encoder is unique in this regard.  That is what makes it difficult to
remember this behavior or to "change my customs".  It is also not
consistant with usenet.
