To expand on Gabriel's comments: one of the main differences between
3.87 and 3.91 is the treatment of high frequencies (via the "ATH").
If you insist on using -k at bitrates around 140kbps, (a bad idea),
you will probably have to try some of the differeent ATH options which
downplays the importance of the high frequencies.  Otherwise lame will
use a lot of bits trying to encode the 16-22khz range.  It represents
20% of the spectrum, but probably only 1% of the sound quality!
