Even in joint stereo mode (-m j), lame automatically switches to LR
(normal stereo) when it finds the difference between the L/R streams too
great for joint stereo to encode without significant loss. When you finish
encoding with lame, even in -m j mode, the last line has something like
Frames: LR: xxxx (xx.x %) MS: xxxx (xx.x%). The former is the frames
encoded in normal stereo, while the latter is the frames encoded in joint
(MS=Mid/Side) stereo.

Since it is possible to allocate valuable bits saved from joint stereo
to other purposes, it would not be advised to use pure LR stereo mode. I
think the -normal/-extreme just set different thresholds for when the
difference between L/R is too great to encode joint stereo.

All in all, you should stick to joint stereo...Lame automatically
encodes normal stereo when it feels it should.
