Thanks for the link Kevin. I found URLs to useful looking info from Mitiok and Dibrom there, both of which are new to me. > Perhaps I misunderstood what you were saying, Id like to shrink the size of some existing 192K MP3s without sacraficing a high percentage of quality to make a bit more room on a few portable MP3 players Ive been comparing. > but I wouldn't think > that re-encoding an mp3 to a lower bitrate would be such a good idea. > I believe in the process one would lose more than just the fidelity > from going to the lower bitrate. I think artifact would be introduced. Indeed. But Im trying to get some feedback from anyone whos tried this, and can relate his/her (hir/hes ;-P) findings for comparison. Comments have been made about re-encoding multiple times. Im guessing that the rate of artifacts added doing this will probably increase at a greater rate than the linear increase in the number of re-encoding procedures. Thats nothing Id be attempting. >From what Im able to detect, there doesnt seem to be an increase of noticeable/objectionable artifacts when I re-encode a well encoded 192K MP3 with Lame VBR at settings Ive mentioned. Id like to delete some 128K copies of the same tracks to free up space the VBR files are taking. With the equipment I have at my disposal, I cant detect any appreciable change in the fidelity in the VBR files Ive re-encoded once. But I may just go ahead and hold on to the smaller 128K duplicates to use on a MP3 portable if I end up getting one soon. > In the past, I was considering an mp3 player. Ill probably go that way at some point myself. But for now, I dont think Ill be listening to the player for long lengths of time, and the lightweight and small size of the portables are pretty attractive to me. The fact that there are no moving parts in the portables is another nice feature. I wish I had a buck for every portable CD player Ive seen in the garbage because someone dropped it. > To get the most out of this unit I coupled it with a decent set of > headphones (Etymotic ER-6) and a headphone amp (Airhead). Thats another problem with most high tech stuff these days, is its hard to find a place where I can get my hands all the things Id would like to compare. > I never realized that mp3s can sound this good until I had this combo. > Of course, I've also heard some really poor quality mp3s as well. Thats for sure. The software and hardware of a system can sometime make worlds of difference in the resultant quality of MP3s. Im actually pretty surprised that this little Toshiba Libretto is apparently able to create pretty darned good files. > (Probably not encoded with Lame or ripped with EAC).
