Thanks, but maybe I didn't make this part clear. I rely on the SHOUTcast DSP in Winamp to generate the stream. SHOUTcast then uses the LAME DLL to re-encode the source audio files (which are in various formats and bitrates) as a 96 kbps stereo stream. The SHOUTcast DSP does not offer very many options for tweaking the encoding options. I can choose 96 kbps 44.1 kHz stereo or mono. When I choose stereo, it is pretty obviously using the LAME DLL's default settings for 96 kbps. Of course I have tried to get Nullsoft to offer more configuration options or to at least use smarter settings for 96 kbps, but even if they do take my advice, the underlying problem remains: LAME's default 96 kbps settings are of significantly poorer quality than its 128-and-above defaults. If LAME made --alt-preset 96 or something thereabouts the default, then this would solve the problem in SHOUTcast and would also obviate the need for --alt-preset 96. In other words, why make "crappy" the default? - Mike ____________________________________________________________________________ mike j. brown | xml/xslt: http://skew.org/xml/ denver/boulder, colorado, usa | resume: http://skew.org/~mike/resume/ _______________________________________________ mp3encoder mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://minnie.tuhs.org/mailman/listinfo/mp3encoder
