[MP3 ENCODER] mono vs stereo encoding problem

I'm using lame_enc.dll and Visual Basic to build an application.  Whenever I encode a mono wav file the playback sounds like "double speed" (or if you're really old like me, a 33 1/3 played at 78).  It sounds fine when I encode stereo files.   Any suggestions for command line options, etc?   Thanks,  DWM
