I friend of mine told me that ATH type 3 was designed to produce better results
than the default used by LAME. I've used in the command line but not very info
about it. Can you point me some literature about the different types curves and
the reason why one should use them?
You should not change the curves. Anyway, inside Lame (since several versions) they are in fact the same curve with different parameters applyed to it.
