I recently upgraded to the latest LAME, and found that encoding had gotten much, much slower:
LAME 3.96.1: takes 9:21 to convert a 4:37 WAV to an MP3. LAME 3.92: takes 0:40 to do the same. That's 0.49x versus 6.92x -- a slowdown of 14x. I downloaded and compiled successive non-beta versions of LAME to find out where things went wrong, and the slowdown was introduced between releases 3.93.1 (fast) and 3.95.1 (slow.) 3.96.1 appears to be using ASM: > CPU features: MMX (ASM used), 3DNow! (ASM used), SSE > Using polyphase lowpass filter, transition band: 17249 Hz - 17782 Hz > Encoding as 44.1 kHz 128 kbps j-stereo MPEG-1 Layer III (11x) qval=0 This is on Fedora Core 2, Linux 2.6.8-1.521 i686, on an AMD Athlon XP 1600+. All binaries compiled locally with gcc 3.3.3 20040412. -- Jamie Zawinski [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.jwz.org/ [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.dnalounge.com/ _______________________________________________ mp3encoder mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://minnie.tuhs.org/mailman/listinfo/mp3encoder
