Ed,

I'm not really an expert here, but I do know that every time you recompress 
a lossy file, it's going to get worse. This is something I always avoid 
unless absolutely necessary. Re-encoding a 320 is better than going lower, 
but it's still double compression. Whether this is noticeable will vary from 
person to person, but it's just not good practice. If possible, I would try 
to remake these files from the original source. And I'm really not in a 
position to say this, but maybe you should seek out a player that supports 
VBR. It might save you a lot of trouble in the end...

I admit I've become a purist over time. I actually would prefer to not even 
use mp3 if space limitations didn't exist... Best of luck!
