The fact that it works with --enable-debug likely means that you are encountering a compiler bug. Your gcc version is quite old, and you might want to upgrade to a newer OS.
(I recommend Debian, since MPB works well there and installation is easy since MPB is precompiled and included in Debian.)

Did you try the case where HDF5 is compiled *without* parallel support and MPB is compiled with --enable-debug?
