Thanks for your reply. It appears that compiling HDF5 1.6.5
without parallel support and building MPB with --enable-debug has
resulted in a working configuration on our cluster.

The fact that it works with --enable-debug likely means that you are
encountering a compiler bug. Your gcc version is quite old, and you
might want to upgrade to a newer OS.
(I recommend Debian, since MPB works well there and installation is easy
since MPB is precompiled and included in Debian.)

and MPB is compiled with --enable-debug?
