Are you asking "why upsampling" or "why upsampling symmetrically"?

Depending on the quality of the DAC, to upsample the signal via software
might lead to better results.
About symmetrical upsampling, the aim is to reduce the computational effort
(assuming this might really be the case).
My DACs are not really super high-end, and it seems to me the sound is
better if I upsample in software, especially with mpd with sox, especially
when using integer multipliers.

Of course these themes are very controversial: there are lots of pages
around, and of course no universally agreed conclusions.

It would be nice to be able to experiment while using mpd and avoiding to
switch lots of different output configurations.

I respect your opinion if you believe this feature would be out of mpd's
scope; still, if you have suggestion on how to obtain equivalent results in
a different way, I would be grateful to have some information from you.
