Not only is $120,000 ludicrous it is redundant. Just three/four years ago
Park Board Commissioner Rochelle Berry-Graves put together a Blue Ribbon
Commission with Frank Quilici (former Twins honcho) to head up the Select
Committee on Youth Sports. We are now just beginning to reap the benefits
of that outstanding report and get funding and increase services in
Recreation -specifically sports - in the Park system. We also have a seat
on the YCB and don't understand why we the Park Board rep) wouldn't have
pushed harder on supporting and using that report.
Now it would have made more sense to me if Boston is being protected by all
his friends he's made since being here in Minneapolis that he would help
the YWCA with it's inner-city Olympic Training Program. It was my
understanding when the new Midtown Y was built it was suppopsed to have
gotten some funding from the IOC in order to help develop inner-city talent
in a couple of Olympic sports ( I don't remember which ones) - now that
seems to me something Boston could truly help with developing. I doubt
thought if the Y could have come up with that hefty salary but it would
help make our already really successful Y have some "world-class".
And just as an aside - althought the Park Board is working hard to clean up
the fields, make them more playable, and increase sports activity for young
people there is also equity being sought to also increase Arts programming
along with environmental and other interesting programs - since all kids
don't want to play sports. REmmebr those old basketweaving classes - there
are still some peopl out there that would be happy just to do basket-weaving.
